Leading is more than commanding people or managing orders. Leaders have the power of influence. Lodged in every human frame is the power of influence waiting to be roused. No two people are ever the same, each having their unique expression of this power.

On 23 October 2018, we had our National Young Leaders Day, nationwide youth conference featuring luminary speakers and leaders in business, social change, entertainment, and technology fields to inspire youth. Through a curated line up of stories and workshops, we aim to inspire young people to take their first step towards success, regardless of position or status.

Since its first run in 2003, NYLD is a nation-wide conference targeted at young people within the age bracket of 15-19 years old. We believe it is in this critical life stage that youths begin navigating through an ever-changing society, in which they hope to find their place. Through a wide range of curated stories and workshops, we hope to help these young leaders and entrepreneurs take their first baby step towards success.

“I’ve been empowered to lead my schoolmates by serving them with conviction and compassion. Through the speakers, I’ve learnt how critical it is to have moral courage in the way I lead. It is important to do what is right, not just what is popular.”

– Marie Ann Wong, Singapore Chinese Girls’ School

At this year’s NYLD, we talked about influence. Influence isn’t bestowed by virtue of our success, or taken away by our failures. It was never meant to be found only on the big stage, or left accessible to an elite few who qualify. The power of influence is in our hands to wield.

We saw a total of 427 participants from 29 schools at our full-day youth event. This year, we had workshops curated by our speakers for our students. We were privileged to have Associate Professor Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, then-Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Social and Family Development, Mr. Tong Yee, Co-Founder of School of Thought, Leader of The Thought Collective, Mr. Isaac Ong, Founder of Colours Global, Ms. Amanda Chong, Lawyer, Poet and Co-Founder of Readable, and Ms. Nurshahidah Roslie, Singapore’s First Professional Female Boxer and Founder of Juggernaut Studios.

“NYLD has reminded me why I joined the teaching fraternity in the first place – to inspire the next generation to be the change and inspire others, while spreading love, empathy and grace to all.”

– Mr. Khoo, Hougang Secondary School

“I learnt from my time at NYLD that no matter what your background is or how many times you fail, it is always possible to succeed and overcome difficulties. All we really need is perseverance and support from others.”

– Kay Sandy, School of Science and Technology

The event started with an exclusive Educator’s Dialogue with our Keynote Speaker, Tong Yee. He shared about the complexities of changing society, and their implications on leadership development practices. Change is always challenging and can be very difficult for teachers; but it is also imperative that the broader school systems recognise the impact and significance of their work and are able to innovate and evolve alongside global development. Youths present were able to hear from Isaac and how having a mindset shift is pivotal in taking the initiative to create a culture of giving and encouragement. Amanda, through her life experiences, talked about what guided her path, what her life compass is, and how she got to where she is today. Shah shared with everyone on her journey to becoming Singapore’s first woman pro boxer. Fraught with setbacks, challenges & criticisms, she learned how to break through the barriers that stand in the way of our goals.

ABOUT OUR 2018 THEME

Lodged in every human frame is a power waiting to be roused. The full extent of its magnitude known to those who are brave enough to test its limits. No two people are ever the same, each having their unique expression of this power. Through the windows of life, we catch a glimpse of what can be – the potential of greatness.

Influence isn’t bestowed by virtue of your success, or taken away by your failures. It was never meant to be found only on the big stage, or left accessible to an elite few who qualify. The power of influence is in your hands to wield.

At NYLD 2018, we’re letting you stand on the definitive line of influence. The line between the groundbreaking and the apathetic. Harnessing the power of influence has laid dormant and untapped, unleashing it to create a positive shift in your sphere of influence.
