Civil Servant
Former Halogen Intern

What does influence mean to you?

To me, influence is the extent of how much one’s character, hard work and talents can make an impact around you. It allows one to lead others around them and bring about positive change.

What are some memories/experiences of influence being exercised in your life? (If possible, do link it to an experience with Halogen Foundation)

I distinctly remember having to shoot interview videos of the National Young Leaders Award nominees as an intern, and I was deeply impressed by how spirited they were. Through the interviews, I learned more about what inspired them, and how they led others around them to be the best versions of themselves and to help the people around them. The nominees also had an endless well of hope and determination which was so amazingly infectious. I think it’s safe to say that experiences like these in Halogen directly inspired me to take on leadership roles in university, and for that I am very grateful.

How has your time with Halogen impacted the way you exercise influence in your everyday life?

My time in Halogen has contributed to my growth as a person in so many ways. It taught me practical skills like shooting and editing videos, but more importantly the importance of guiding and investing in the youth, and that good leadership starts from your own willingness and capacity to lead yourself. Therefore, through my experience in Halogen, I make it a point to live out these values as I lead others in my workplace. I am also more aware of how influence can be a double-edged sword that enables you to bring about both positive and negative change, therefore I am more careful about the words I use and the actions that I take.

In your personal view, what is the potential of influence?

Personally, I believe that having the ability to influence others around you is key to making a positive impact on the community around you. There is only so much a lone person can do, but a collective effort brought together by excellent leadership and a wide sphere of influence will allow for so much more good to be brought into the world.
